Reader's WorkshopMain Selection: This week, we began a study of penguins as an introduction to Personalized Learning. After Spring Break, students will have the opportunity to study a topic of their own choosing. We're working through this process with a topic we chose this week so that the students have experience researching and note taking from a variety of sources: books, videos, websites, experts, etc.
------------------------------------------------------------- Work on Writing: Students used nonfiction reference books and a collection of books on Epic! to learn about penguins and take notes. 1st Grade Word Work: Students worked on forming contractions. 2nd Grade Word Work: Students differentiated between synonyms, antonyms, and homophones with a dice game. They also summarized their learning of the present and past tenses. Connect with Tech: Students watched a live webcam of penguins at a zoo in California and posted their observations on SeeSaw. Listen to Reading: Students listened to a nonfiction reference book about Antarctica (home of the Emperor and a few other types of penguins) on Raz-Kids and took notes. Science/S.S.: Students chose one of eleven different types of penguins to learn about on PebbleGo and took notes on what they learned. Art/Makerspace: At the art table, students used torn construction paper, bubble wrap, and styrofoam to create a penguin in Antarctica. |
Week OverviewMonday: The students were excited to check the progress their mushers made over the weekend! The students are moving the musher they chose along our interactive Iditarod map in our classroom. We'll be tracking them each morning!
Tuesday: This morning, we participated in an awesome live interview through the National Geographic Explorer Program with a conservationist who works for the Global Penguin Society. While in Argentina, conservationist Pablo Borboroglu shared the tools he uses as he studies penguins. He gave us a shout out and answered the questions we sent in the live chat! He discussed the challenges penguins face and how we can help. Because our oceans and air are all connected, Pablo shared how our actions here in Illinois all make an impact on the penguins. He suggested limiting our use of single-use plastics (like straws, plastic water bottles, etc.) We're hoping we can make small changes to make a big difference! Wednesday: During Writer's Workshop, students have been working in partnerships to interview each other and write a book of facts about their buddy. They are including opening and closing sentences in their nonfiction writing. They are also working on proofreading their writing by asking themselves: 1) Do my sentences make sense? 2) Did I start my sentences with a capital letter? Did I end my sentences with a period or exclamation mark? 3) Did I capitalize proper nouns? 4) Did I spell word wall words correctly? Thursday: We began our author share this morning during Writer's Workshop. It has been fun to learn more about our classmates as we listen to students share the books they wrote about their partners. Each student "gifted" the book they wrote to their buddy. :) Friday: We worked through an Iditarod Nearpod this afternoon to summarize our learning about this amazing race! We've enjoyed tracking the mushers this week and look forward to seeing who crosses the finish line first! |
